NORINCO Type 89 (155mm)

Towed Howitzer

China | 1989

"Unlike Soviet-originated artillery systems taken on by China, the homegrown Type 89 towed gun favored the Western 155mm NATO standard projectile."

It only made sense for the flourishing Chinese military industry to incorporate a 155mm caliber towed artillery piece while also adapting it to use 155mm NATO-standard projectiles to broaden its export reach. This proved the case with the Type 89 155mm system which incorporated all-modern features including an Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) for limited self-propulsion capabilities. Development of this new artillery piece happened during the 1980s and was based on an American design by Space Research Corporation (SRC).

At its core, the Type 89 is a conventional artillery system utilizing a multi-wheeled, heavy-duty split-trail carriage for transport by mover vehicle. The gun barrel its atop a mounting assembly allowing for elevation changes and some traversal from centerline. The recoil mechanism is integral to the design of the Type 89's firing function. A multi-slotted muzzle brake also affords some recoil reduction. Using a semi-automatic breech action, the weapon can supply a healthy rate-of-fire for sustained fire support at range. A typical crew is five and resupply is through accompanying ammunition carriers. Having access to the 155mm NATO standard projectile means the Type 89 can fire a wide range of warhead types and Rocket-Assisted Projectiles (RAPs) are used to vastly increase engagement ranges.

The complete Type 89 system weighs 12 tons and features a base range out to 24 miles. Its rate-of-fire is two to four rounds-per-minute.
