The MiG-19 Farmer was the first Soviet-built supersonic jet fighter and saw greater production with the Chinese as the Shenyang J-6.

The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-19 "Farmer" was an entirely new aircraft design though it shared many external similarities with the existing MiG-15 and MiG-17 models. Building upon lessons learned on those former designs, the MiG-19 also featured the large forward intake opening, single-seat cockpit and large rudder. The system would go on to become the best MiG jet fighter to date and become the Soviet Union's first-ever supersonic fighter.

The MiG-19 was already on the drawing boards by the time the Korean War had rolled around, though the system would not see service in that conflict. The MiG-19 featured a unique intake design that its preceding cousins did not - the intake was in fact split to feed air separately to the two Tumansky powerplants (earlier MiG fighters were fielded with just a single turbojet). This allowed the fighter speed capabilities unseen in previous versions of the series. The powerplants related to the MiG-19 were also the first mass-produced turbojet engines in the country.

From an early stage, the MiG-19 platform proved a bit too unstable, particularly at higher speeds. Once this problem was ironed out through a redesign of the exterior surfaces and the addition of large moving planes, the system went into full production on all fronts. Variants of the base MiG-19 fighter would become missile-armed interceptors, reconnaissance models and specialized radar-fitted interceptors. Supplied to all major Soviet-controlled fronts, the MiG-19 made a large footprint in the world of military aviation.

China undertook a similarly designed version of the MiG-19 for their own as the Shenyang J-6. This version would further be outfitted to even more nations on the Communist side, bringing the production total of the MiG-19 series as a whole close to the 8,000 mark. In the end, the system would become a veteran of conflicts the world over, seeing combat with Pakistan and Vietnamese forces in the 1960's and 1970's respectively. The MiG-19 would further set the stage of the arrival of the highly lethal MiG-21 "Fishbed", detailed elsewhere on this site.
