Hawker Sea Hurricane Carrier-Borne Fighter (1941)

Authored By Staff Writer | Last Updated: 7/22/2008

The Hawker Sea Hurricane was nothing more than a conversion of the successful Hawker Hurricane land-based fighter.

The Hawker Sea Hurricane appeared in 1941 in an effort to protect British merchant ships from German naval attacks. Basically modified versions of the successful Hawker land-based Hurricane fighters, Sea Hurricanes were at first fitted with catapult spools for catapult launching off of these ships. Later Sea Hurricanes faced a full adaptation to carrier operations and were fitted with arrestor systems for deck landings. The Sea Hurricane served in quantity from their inception to about 1943 to which they were already being replaced by more dedicated units such as the Supermarine Seafire.

The Sea Hurricane looked every bit the part of her land-based cousin as very little of the aircrafts design was effected in this new role. The initial conversion of a land-based Hurricane appeared as the Sea Hurricane Mk IA and was fitted with a catapult spool capable of launching from specially fitted merchant ships. Though providing the needed protection, the Sea Hurricane pilot was either forced to land at a land-base in range or ditch his aircraft into the see altogether and hoped to be picked up by a passing ally.

The Sea Hurricane Mk IB was the first in the series to feature the aforementioned catapult spool and arrestor gear for carrier-based operations and landings. All early versions were fitted with machine guns until the arrival of the Sea Hurricane Mk IC, which now sported 4 x 20mm cannons in place of the machine guns. With a new engine (the Merlin XX) and in either the machine gun or cannon armament form, the Sea Hurricane now appeared in respective forms as the Mk IIB and the Mk IIC. Despite these variants production was limited to just these few marks and since most came from modified existing Hurricanes, some were already battle-weary airframes. Sea Hurricanes saw combat action almost immediately and offered up promising results but, alas, the original Hurricane design had its birth in the 1930's had run its course and was being replaced by other more sea-operating aircraft (including American-made Wildcats) by the middle years of the war.
