The 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge is the NATO-standardized full-power rifle cartridge currently in use across NATO countries and related allies. The type originated in the American M14 Battle Rifle and used in the M60 General Purpose Machine Gun prior - both weapons utilized with efficiency in the Vietnam War. The 7.62x51mm cartridge was first introduced in 1954 and is currently (2013) in widespread circulation, being fielded in countless conflicts the world over.

The 7.62x51mm has proven a popular cartridge for both automatic and bolt-action rifle systems.
