CNS Weifang (550) is part of the large Type 054A guided-missile frigate warship class (known to NATO as Jiangkai II) serving the modern People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). The class stands as one of the more important vessel designs available to the service thanks to its all-modern design, stealth characteristics, and broad weapons array. CNS Weifang was built by the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding company out of Shanghai and launched on July 9th, 2012. She was formally commissioned into service on June 22nd, 2013.

As part of the Type 054A group, Weifang follows suit with the standard displacement rating of 4,055 tonnes under full load. She has a running length of 440 feet and a beam reaching 52 feet, restricting the hull to Blue Water service. Internally, the warship carries a COmbined Diesel-And-Diesel (CODAD) propulsion arrangement to maximize fuel efficiency and balance speed depending on the required action. This allows the ship to make headway at 27 knots under ideal conditions and range out some 8,025 nautical miles (9,235 miles).

Aboard is a complement of 165 and installed systems include the Chinese Type 372 radar system was well as the Type 344 radar. There are four Type 345 radar installations as well as the Type 347G Fire Control System (FCS) to direct the 76mm deck gun. Racal provides the twin RM-1290 navigation radars and the Combat Data System (CDS) is from Thomson-CSF.

Electronic Warfare (EW) is handled through the Type 922-1 Radar Warning Receiver, HZ-100 ECM suite, and the Kashtan-3 series missile jammer.

Armament-wise, the suite is a mix of ballistic, missile, and torpedo solutions to meet most any at-sea threat head on. This is led by the 76mm turreted deck gun of Dual-Purpose (DP) design. There is a 32-cell Vertical Launching System (VLS) embedded in the hull to support the HQ-16 Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) and/or the Yu-8 Anti-Submarine ROCket (ASROC). As with most modern warships, Weifang also showcases 2 x 4-cell anti-ship / land-attack missile launchers near midships. Close-in defense is provided for by a pair of 30mm Type 730 Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWSs). Rounding out the armament fit are 2 x 324mm triple torpedo tubes (supporting the Yu-7 series torpedo family) and a pair of 240mm 6-shot Type 87 ASROC launchers with 36 reloads.

The overall profile of the vessel is consistent with the Type 054A design philosophy that restricts protrusions and focuses on stealth. The turreted deck gun sits alone over the forecastle with the VLS directly behind. The bridge section is positioned aft of the VLS and over the forecastle with a relatively commanding view of the ocean ahead. The main mast work is enclosed and seats all manner of sensors and processing systems. A secondary mast is integrated into the enclosed, low-profile smoke funnels amidships. The stern is dominated by a combination helipad-hangar facility area supporting the operation of a single navalized rotorcraft for Over-the-Horizon (OtH) work. The typical helicopter used is the homegrown Harbin Z-9C or the Russian Kamov Ka-28 series.
