The Remington Model 783 is a modern-day, bolt-action hunting rifle. It utilizes a conventional design layout integrating the grip, shoulder support, and forend along a synthetic stock with metal components inlaid. The bolt handle sits over the right side of the body and mounting positions over the frame allow for use of various after-market scopes. The trigger is underslung in the usual way and a pair of sling loops facilitate transport of the gun when on the march. The matte blue-finished carbon steel barrel is of the free-floating variety, this accomplished through a dual-pillar bedding arrangement.

Key features of this rifle include its adjustable CrossFire trigger unit, recoil pad at the shoulder, included scope mountings, sling loops, and 3- or 4-round steel detachable box magazine (model dependent).

The Model 783 is marketed with chamberings covering the gamut of popular cartridges: .243 Winchester, 7mm-08 Remington, 6.5 Creedmoor, .308 Winchester, .270 Winchester, 30-06 Springfield, 7mm Remington Magnum, and .300 Winchester Magnum. Chambering dictates several qualities including magazine capacity, overall length/barrel length, twist rate, and length-of-pull (Magnum calibers offer one fewer round in the magazine).

The Model 783 is marketed to big game and range / recreational shooters.

Variants of the line are the Model 783 "Synthetic" with synthetic stock, Model 783 "Heavy Barrel Threaded" with heavy target profile barrel, and Model 783 "Synthetic Camo" which, as its name suggests, is finished with a unique woodland camouflage pattern.
